Tour Civil War Shelters and Saint Cristóbal Hill

Almería is home to a network of underground shelters from the Spanish Civil War, among the most extensive and best preserved in Europe, testimony to its history during the bombardments. The proposed route starts by tourist train from the port, going through the Nicolás Salmerón Park and the Cargadero del Mineral, a symbol of 20th century industrial architecture. The Puerta de Purchena, a historical and commercial axis since the 19th century, stands out for its vibrant atmosphere and emblematic buildings such as the Casa de Las Mariposas (1909) and the ‘canillo del agua’, surrounded by legends that link its visitors to the city.

The itinerary continues to the Cerro de San Cristóbal, where regeneration works reveal layers of urban and military history. From its viewpoint, you can admire a unique panoramic view of the city, the port, the Alcazaba and the only preserved Muslim wall (11th century), together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus in marble. The route culminates at the Heritage Interpretation Centre (CIP) in the Plaza Vieja, which, through models and interactive resources, narrates the evolution of Almería from its origins to modern times, closing with a viewpoint that frames the Alcazaba and the multicultural legacy of the city.
